Buffalo Stars' fund raiser benefits local troops

Niagara Falls, N.Y. --  The Buffalo Stars, a junior hockey team not only rally when they're on the ice but off-ice they're a force to be reckoned with. Wanting to make a difference in the lives of local military members and their families the team organized a fund raising event that netted more than $900 in area gift cards for the 107th Airlift Wing Family Support Group.
During the opening ceremonies of a double header held on 9/11 more than 2200 fans showed up to honor Military members past and present and also honor the memories of those lost on 9/11. The ceremony began much like any other, with a Marine Honor Guard presenting the Colors, patriotic music being played and the singing of the national anthem. The difference was that instead of paying a nominal admission fee, fans were asked to either donate a gift card that would be forwarded to the 107thAW or participate in a Chinese Auction with the proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project.
"We all know the sacrifices men and women in the military make each day, but so do their families," said Pete Preteroti the Buffalo Stars president. "Many families often struggle to make ends meet while their loved ones are away answering their nations call. This is also true among reservists, whose families have to live without the pay checks he or she would normally earn in their everyday jobs. We owe it to our local military families to offer a helping hand," he added.
"We're very appreciative of the efforts the Buffalo Stars, with the upcoming holidays, these gift cards will make a huge difference too many unit members and their families," said Jeanne W. Goetze the 107th Airlift Wing Airman & Family Readiness Program Manager.
